Q: It’s been a tricky run of races for you, but a home race for the team this weekend. Can you tell us what sort of work you’ve been doing behind the scenes to try and make sure that this weekend is a more positive one?
I didn’t do a really much specific kind of preparation into this weekend. I mean, obviously, just the usual work. I’m happy with the approach I’m doing. Previous race week, yeah, I mean, a couple of things didn’t work out. You know, partly, some of it is not even my control as well, like last weekend in FP3. So, I mean, to be honest, without that, it was not really clean into race week as well last week. But at the same time, I feel like I’m definitely in the right direction, higher progress, and with my rhythm. Obviously, it’s not the speed that probably everybody wants, but, yeah, at least I’m showing a positivity every race week. So, I’m happy with it. I just have to put it all together, and I feel more confident every race week. And definitely, I feel more confident ever, more than any other race week already now. So, just in the learning curve right now, and just keep what I’m doing.
Q: To reach the level that you know you can reach, is it only a question of confidence, or you still need different areas to try to improve?
Confidence. Yeah. Understandable car. Confidence in the experience. Like, for example, knowing that what you’re going to get in every session, straight away from lap one, it’s already a big advantage. Currently, every first lap, I have to be a little bit cautious, because I don’t really know what kind of behavior I’m going to get. That’s why, when I try to start out, I went slightly a bit too much, and even more things happened. So, yeah. I mean, those things teaches me that I have to learn more, and I’m not even understanding about this car yet, at all. So, yeah. And especially in qualifying situation, that you have to use maybe half a lap at least to learn the car. It’s already, especially in qualifying, such a limited time, a very tight session. It’s not ideal. Obviously, I know everything, what kind of behavior I’m going to get. So, those things come from experience and confidence. And those things, you need a bit of time. Yeah. But at the same time, definitely I’m in the right direction. Every race, those things build up more. So, I’m happy with the approach so far.

今週末のために特別な準備をしたわけではありません。いつも通りの準備です。今のアプローチには満足しています。先週のレース週末では、いくつかうまくいかないことがありました。中には自分ではどうにもならないこともあって、たとえばFP3の件ですね。正直に言えば、先週の週末はスムーズとは言えませんでした。ただ、確実に正しい方向に進んでいると感じていますし、リズムも良くなってきています。みんなが望むような速さは出せていないかもしれませんが、毎回前向きな要素を示せていると思います。その点には満足しています。全部をうまくまとめる必要がありますが、毎週末、自信がついてきています。間違いなく今が一番自信がありますね。今は学びの段階にいるので、このまま続けていくだけです。
Q: 自分の目指すレベルに到達するには、自信だけの問題ですか？それとも他に改善が必要な点がありますか？
自信ですね。あとは、クルマに対する理解や経験からくる自信も大事です。たとえば、どのセッションでも1周目から何が起こるか分かっているのは大きなアドバンテージです。今の僕は、最初の1周目ではまだ様子を見ないといけない。どういう挙動になるのか分からないので、最初から少し慎重にならざるを得ません。だからこそ、いざ踏み込んだときに少し行き過ぎてしまったり、色々とトラブルが起きてしまう。そういう経験が、まだまだ学ぶことがあると教えてくれるし、正直まだこのマシンのことを完全に理解できていないと思っています。特に予選では、限られた時間の中で半周くらい使ってマシンを学ばなければならないので、それは理想的ではありません。もし最初からすべてが分かっていたら、違った展開になるはずです。そうした理解や自信は、経験を積むことでしか得られません。時間がかかります。でも、確実に前進しています。毎レース、そういう自信が積み上がってきているので、今のアプローチには満足しています。
